Mostly that the person with the most usually wins.

Buying streets, stacking tiny plastic houses and quietly bending the rules when nobody was paying attention. That was Monopoly stacks of coloured money, and the simple objective of owning everything. If that meant a little cheating along the way… well, that was practically part of the strategy.

“Go directly to jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect £200”

Simple rules, clear consequences. Real life, of course, seems to play out a little differently.

Illegal business controls America; Monopoly, in its strange way mirrors that. It’s a children’s game built entirely around property, power and profit. The longer you look at it, the less it feels like a game and more like a simplified diagram of how things actually work.

This piece leans into that thought. The strange overlap between childhood games and the real world systems they quietly imitate.

Monopoly always felt like harmless fun, but the longer you look at it, the more it starts to feel like a training exercise.

The process itself is pretty simple, but time-heavy. Two stencils, each cut by hand. Building that wall of words with spray paint. Followed by Mr Monopoly, ink tightens the stencilled lines, filling in the bridges. The final touch is a contrasting pastel outline, finished by hand.

Everything is completely handmade, each piece in the series is painted individually, so no two are exactly the same.
It’s a playful image on the surface, but there’s a bit of a wink behind it.

After all the person with the most money usually wins.

Stencil, Spray, Smile, Repeat.
Bob

Original painting
2 colour stencil
Spray paint + ink
Pastel hand finishing
300gsm heavy stock paper
50 x 50 cm
Limited Edition of 30
More Info

Today’s process is repetition.

Where protest language becomes pattern.

European Bob

EAT THE RICH is a phrase that has a long cultural life. Stencils are cut line by line, a process that resists speed & automation. The time spent here becomes part of the final image, a way of building meaning before an image ever appears.

At the centre of the work is Mickey Mouse. An icon that exists at the beginning of many people’s visual memory. Bright colours, simple forms & a sense of safety. Mickey was part of childhood; familiar, comforting & everywhere.

The background is built first. Yellow paint lays down functional language, designed to caution rather than decorate.
Over this sits something instantly recognisable. Calm. Unbothered, holding a can of poison…

Details are refined by hand using ink, edges tightened & bridges restored. Red pastel is applied by hand, subtle but deliberate. Each piece is hand-sprayed, meaning no two are identical. Overspray & imperfections remain visible as evidence of the process.

Mickey is often treated as culturally neutral, but icons don’t stay neutral. Characters become tied to corporate power, scale & influence. What begins as innocence can become a tool. Warning signs are easier to ignore when they’re wrapped in something we trust.

There’s a quiet reference here to Full Metal Jacket, where the Mickey Mouse Club song plays over scenes of destruction. The song isn’t changed, it’s simply placed in a context where it no longer fits.

This piece operates in the same space. Mickey doesn’t need distortion. He just needs context.

The work is available as a limited, hand-made edition. Every piece begins the same way: with a blank piece of paper, a sharp blade & a lot of time.

Each artwork is built through layers of hand-cut stencils. Every cut is deliberate. Every bridge is planned so the stencil holds together. There’s no automation here; just patience, focus & repetition. It’s slow work, but it’s honest work.

Once the stencils are cut, each layer is spray painted by hand. I paint one colour at a time, carefully aligning layers, weighting stencils to control overspray. Some areas come out crisp, others a little rough around the edges and I like it that way. Those small imperfections are proof that my hand was involved from start to finish.

After the painting is complete, I go back in and clean up the lines. Bridges are filled. Details are refined. This final stage pulls everything together and gives the piece its finished feel.

Once I then tend to go rogue which is where the hand finishing comes in. Everything is a bit more relaxed, pastel marks where my hand finds fit. A great contrast to the crisp lines found with stencilling.

Artwork is then hand stamped, numbered & signed by me. It’s a small ritual, but an important one. It marks the end of the process and the beginning of the artwork’s life in the world.

This way of working isn’t the fastest or the easiest. I could press print & produce identical copies all day long but that’s not me. What I care about is the process. The hours spent cutting. The quiet moments while painting. The problem solving when something doesn’t go to plan.

Handmade work carries its own energy. You can see how it was made. You can feel the time in it. Each piece is slightly different, because each one has to be & my way of doing it.

If you’re someone who values handmade art, original stencil work & pieces that are built layer by layer instead of mass-produced, you can view my current body of work via the link below.

More Info

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Peace & Love,

Bob

Thanks for reading European Bob ! He’s surrounded by wealth, but somehow still frozen in it - a symbol of abundance that doesn’t necessarily mean freedom.

The process behind this work really leaned into the idea of time as currency. They say time is money, so today I spent all of mine cutting stencils. Slowly. Deliberately. Cut after cut. It’s repetitive, focused and oddly calming - but also a reminder of how quickly hours slip away when you’re deep in the making.

Spray paint comes next, shifting the pace. Faster, louder and more instinctive. The paint layers add depth, while the final yellow pastel hand finishing brings everything back to something human. Smudges, pressure marks, small imperfections are proof that each piece is made by hand, one piece at a time.

To me, this artwork reflects on the quiet economy of time: how we spend it, waste it, trade it and try to control it. Through stencils and spray paint, something fleeting becomes fixed — even if only for a moment.

Art doesn’t offer answers here. It just pauses the clock long enough to notice it ticking.

Artwork Details

Original painting

2-colour hand-cut stencil

Spray paint + ink

Yellow pastel hand finishing

300gsm heavy stock paper

50 × 50 cm

Edition of 30

If you’d like to add this piece to your wall, the original works are available now through my store.

More Info...

Love Not War...with an angry duck

Donald Duck

European Bob

This piece started with Donald Duck. He’s emotional, reactive, permanently on edge. An odd choice to sit in front of a message about peace, but that contrast felt honest. Anger and optimism often exist at the same time, especially now.

The process is all hands on from start to finish. The close up shots show the hand-cut stencils, cut slowly and deliberately. That part of the process is oddly relaxing; repetitive, focused, almost meditative.

Spray painting flips the mood completely. It’s faster, louder and always unpredictable. The reveal, when the stencil comes off, never gets old.

The final layer is pastel, applied by hand. This is where I loosen things up. Rough marks, smudges and imperfections add to the piece. It pulls the piece away from feeling too clean or digital and brings it back to something human.

In the in-situ shot, the work sits easily on the wall, bold but not overwhelming. It’s not asking to be decoded.
